{"id":52,"date":"2009-11-06T04:26:45","date_gmt":"2009-11-06T04:26:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kristau.net\/blog\/?p=52"},"modified":"2009-11-06T04:26:45","modified_gmt":"2009-11-06T04:26:45","slug":"eat-sustainable-seafood","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kristau.net\/blog\/52\/","title":{"rendered":"Eat sustainable seafood!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Inspired by Alton Brown\u2019s most recent episode of <a title=\"Episode EA1308H\" href=\"http:\/\/www.foodnetwork.com\/good-eats\/the-once-and-future-fish\/index.html\">Good Eats: The Once and Future Fish<\/a>, I did a little research into eating sustainably produced and ethically caught seafood.<\/p>\n<p>Alton\u2019s episode referenced a project by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.montereybayaquarium.org\/\">Monterey Bay Aquarium<\/a> called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seafoodwatch.org\">seafoodwatch.org<\/a>. This site keeps you up to date on which varieties of seafood you should enjoy and which you should avoid. Especially handy are the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.montereybayaquarium.org\/cr\/SeafoodWatch\/web\/sfw_iPhone.aspx\">mobile-accessible resources<\/a> including an iPhone app and <a href=\"http:\/\/mobile.seafoodwatch.org\">mobile versions of their pocket guides<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.montereybayaquarium.org\/cr\/cr_seafoodwatch\/download.aspx\">also available as regional <span class=\"caps\">PDF<\/span> guides<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Most of the fish I enjoy are, thankfully, on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.montereybayaquarium.org\/cr\/cr_seafoodwatch\/sfw_health.aspx\">The Super Green List<\/a>, but a few were not. Most notably, I will no longer be ordering <a title=\"a.k.a. Freshwater Eel\" href=\"http:\/\/www.montereybayaquarium.org\/cr\/SeafoodWatch\/web\/sfw_factsheet.aspx?gid=94\">Unagi<\/a>, which I used to enjoy at my favorite sushi joints.<\/p>\n<p>The site makes clear that it is not only the type of seafood which is important, but also how it was raised and harvested. Due to stricter regulations, seafood farmed in the United States or harvested by U.S. flagged ships is often preferred. Wasteful harvesting practices in other parts of the world make it important for you to ask three important questions of your fishmonger or restaurateur:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What is the origin of the seafood?<\/li>\n<li>Was it farm raised or wild caught?<\/li>\n<li>If wild caught, what method was used?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That last question is especially important when it comes to protecting endangered species which tend to get accidentally caught while fishing for the target.<\/p>\n<p>I could go on, but I\u2019ll stop here with the hope that I\u2019ve passed along my inspiration to you.
